Eddy Current Tester is an instrument that can be used for non-destructive testing and to find flaws that are on the surface or close to it in metals that conduct electricity, and it will do so without any contact with the metals. It is working by the principle of using electromagnetic induction.
The probe that contains a coil produces a magnetic field whose direction reverses periodically. When this field is applied to the object, it causes the generation of the electrical currents that swirl around in the metal and are known as the eddy currents. A crack, for instance, will cause a discontinuity to occur and will thereby disrupt the current's flow. The tester's electronics are, however, able to detect this flow disruption by monitoring alterations in the impedance of the probe.
