The School of Nursing, UNTH was established initially as a Specialist Hospital School of Nursing but later approved for training of General Nurses with the University of Nigeria in January 1971.

On April 1st 1973, the school became the School of Nursing, University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital under the University of Nigeria Nsukka. Approval for training was given after inspection by the Nursing Council of Nigeria’s team in March 1972 led by the then Secretary General/Registrar.

The Pioneer Principal of the school Late Mrs. I. C. Amobi was instrumental to the school being in place. The school has since had 2 other Principals in the persons of Mrs. E. N. Maduka and Dr. C. G. Ugochukwu. The current Principal is Mrs. G. C. Obijiaku who is working with her team of academic staff assisted by the non-academic staff.


Type of Programme

The school runs the General Nursing programme which is for a period of three years. Application for entry into the school starts December and ends in January of the next year. The entrance examination into the school takes place around April each year while the interview is in June. About sixty (60) students are admitted yearly and they start training in October.

REQUIREMENT FOR THE THREE YEARS GENERAL NURSING PROGRAMME

Applicants must have at least 5 credit passes in WAEC, SSCE, NECO, or GCE O’Level at not more than two sittings, including Mathematics, English Language, Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Combination of WAEC and NECO, WAEC and WAEC, or NECO and NECO is acceptable. However, NABTEB cannot be combined with WAEC or NECO or another NABTEB. The school is known for its high standards in both internal and external examinations. Sports events form some of the extra-curricular activities in which our students have been excelling. Students from other schools East of the Niger come to this school for orientation and various experiences.
